Brief presentation of the institution

The Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB) with its 20 faculties, RUB’s disciplinary institutional units, is home to 5,600 employees and over 41,000 students from 130 countries. All the great scientific disciplines are united on one compact campus.

The RUB is on its way to becoming one of the leading European universities of the 21st Century. Almost all courses are offered as Bachelor and Master degree programmes. Its excellence programmes have made themselves an international name: its Research School is an international college for structured doctoral research in the life sciences, natural sciences, engineering, the humanities and social sciences. Interfaculty and interdisciplinary Research Departments, which are mutually, nationally and internationally networked, sharpen the profile of the RUB. Added to this is an unsurpassed programme for the promotion of Early Career Researchers, and an excellent infrastructure.

Plasma-related research at RUB is concentrated in an interdisciplinary Research Department (RD) "Plasmas with Complex Interactions". This RD carries plasma techniques and methods well beyond their traditional limits by exploring the interfaces to solid state physics, materials science, chemistry, biology and astronomy. University-wide 23 institutes and research groups with more than 300 employees concentrate in this RD on the following research topics:
- Plasma technology for biomedical applications
- Plasma process development and control
- Nano particles and plasma driven light sources
- New types of plasma sources (ICP, VHF, Jets)
- Plasma treatment of plastics to enhance diffusion properties
- Plasma diagnostics and process monitoring
- Atmospheric micro plasmas
- Plasma Modeling
- Plasmas for ecological power generation

 

Main Plasma with liquids related topics

- Transport of reactive species from the gas phase into the liquid phase and analysis of plasma-induced aqueous chemistry. The focus is set on the influence of plasma treated liquid medium on microorganisms, viruses, and biological macromolecules.

- Ignition of pulsed plasmas in liquids with focus on time- and space-resolved plasma diagnostics.

Main Plasma with liquids related research techniques and equipment

Laser-based plasma diagnostics.

Phase-resolved opticial emission spectroscopy.

Molecular beam threshold ionization mass spectrometry of atmospheric pressure plasmas.

Schlieren imaging of plasmas in liquids.

Streak camera for picosecond time resolution optical measurements.

Strong cooperation with mcrobiologist and chemist on  the campus: analysis of plasma-induced effects on microorganisms and biological macromolecules.
 

Brief information on available facilities related to Plasma with liquids

Various discharge reactors for generation of plasma in liquid and in gas/liquid environments:

- pulsed-dc-driven microdischarges, dielectric barrier discharges (DBD), and  rf-discharges operated at variety of gas mixtures

- experimental setup for optical diagnostics of discharges in liquids (point-to-point or point-to plane configuration)

- S1 safety laboratories for treatment of mutants of bacteria.
